Priorities

Health Care & Prescription Drugs

Universal, affordable, quality health care is a basic human right. It is inconceivable that anyone should ever have to lose their life’s savings or suffer with an untreated illness because the cost of healthcare is not affordable. And no insurance company should ever be allowed to deny someone health insurance or spike their rates because of a pre-existing condition. Deb believes in using the government’s bargaining power to bring down the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs so that life-saving medications are accessible to those who need them.

Women’s Access to Reproductive Healthcare

There is no equality without control over our bodies. Roe v. Wade must remain the law of the land and Deb supports codifying it in federal law. The single most effective way of minimizing the number of abortions is to make contraceptives and health care services widely available and affordable for all regardless of income level. This means funding community-based healthcare clinics that are accessible in all parts of the country.

Protect our Natural Resources

Global climate change is causing real damage and is getting worse every day we don’t act. Deb supports bold, ambitious moves to focus our economy toward greater reliance on renewable energy and energy efficiency while at the same time creating new, high-paying green jobs and training opportunities to support them. It’s time for America to reassert global leadership by electing a president in 2020 who will immediately re-join the international climate agreement that Trump abandoned. She will also fight for strong federal safe drinking water standards and clean air standards.

Protect our Communities & Keep our Schools Safe

Gun manufacturers have been calling the shots for far too long in this country. Something is seriously wrong when kids have to fear going to school because of the risk of getting shot sitting in a classroom. Americans do not suffer with greater mental health issues than those in other developed nations but our levels of gun violence are out of control. Deb will fight to save lives without violating the Second Amendment. She will fight for universal background checks on all gun purchases. She supports outlawing weapons that are designed to fire large rounds of ammunition without having to reload purely for the purpose of maximizing body counts in the shortest period of time. These weapons are capable of causing mass destruction and have no place on our streets pointed at innocent people and our police officers.

Protect and Strengthen Union Rights

The daughter of an AFSCME member, Debbie has witnessed how unions protect the American dream for middle class families by setting the standards for good paying jobs with essential benefits. Growing up, Deb experienced firsthand how her mother’s union job provided the security and benefits for her family following her dad’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. As a Pennsbury School Board Director, she proudly cast a vote to restore health benefits to families of the district’s lowest paid workers, a benefit they had lost in a heated contract concession with the previous board.

Contract discussions are a routine part of school board activities. During her tenure as a school director, Deb served on a board that unanimously ratified a contract with the 848-member Pennsbury Education Association (PEA), which includes teachers, counselors, nurses, social workers, librarians and psychologists. The  Pennsbury Education Association spokeswoman confirmed it was well received by the union members and “passed by a large margin.” In 2017 the Pennsbury School Board approved another contract this time with the 625-member Pennsbury Educational Support Professionals Association (PESPA).

Deb’s actions as a Pennsbury School Board director underscores her commitment to supporting union labor, family sustaining jobs and critical health benefits.

Restore Economic Stability

History has demonstrated that the only people who benefit from “trickle-down economics” are the wealthy, not those struggling to pay their bills (the trickle never gets to them.) The 2018 tax bill that handed massive tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% and to corporations does not pay for itself through economic growth. Instead, it erodes the security of low and moderate income Americans by threatening funding for needed safety-net programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Deb supports a tax plan that benefits working-class people who are struggling to keep up with the rising costs of housing, food, health care and college tuition. She supports workers’ rights and making sure that labor shares in more of the prosperity. She supports raising the federal minimum wage which is currently a poverty wage.

Get Money Out of Politics

Big money in politics has taken over our government leaving so many Americans deeply cynical and disengaged. In a democracy, the job of an elected leader is to work for the people, not for deep-pocketed corporations. Deb has committed to work tirelessly for everyday people and not take a single dollar from a corporate PAC.

Drug Addiction & Opioids

Addiction is a horrific disease and we know that this disease has been affecting low-income and minority communities for decades. No family is immune. Our young people continue to die at alarming rates due primarily to gross negligence and lack of understanding. Any corporation that is intentionally found putting profit over people must be held accountable and such practices stopped. Deb supports providing greater access to effective treatment options, improved training for doctors and nurses on opioid abuse, and working to stop the influx of fentanyl and other illegal drugs that are flooding our communities. She also supports making criminal justice reform a priority to build pathways for individuals in recovery to rebuild their lives.

Equal Rights for LGBTQ+

Deb will stand up and speak out as an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community. In Congress, she will fight discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, protect the legal, employment, and marriage rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, and continue to support anti-bullying efforts in our schools. Deb also supports the Equality Act, a bill pending in Congress that would amend the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system.

Supporting Our Veterans & Our Troops

It is our responsibility to take care of our brave vets to honor their service and sacrifice to our country. This includes making sure that no veteran ever goes homeless and has excellent health care. Deb recognizes the importance of improving our VA system by increasing staff to cut down on long wait times for medical treatment. She also recognizes the need to address the prevalence of PTSD among our veterans and supports increased funding for much needed mental health services.

Immigration

We need secure borders, but Trump’s actions are reckless and inhumane. Ripping children away from their mothers and fathers and a $20 billion border wall are not the way to address immigration policy in America. The Trump administration is responsible for these human rights abuses, as are any members of Congress who continue to remain silent in the face of such extreme cruelty.  Deb’s own grandparents came to the United States fleeing persecution, longing for a better life for their family. She believes we must regain our standing in the world as a leader for human rights by once and for all implementing common sense immigration reform including a pathway to citizenship for the DREAMers.

United States & Israel Relations

Israel is the United States’ strongest ally in the Middle East and Deb is dedicated to preserving the sovereignty of the Jewish State’s rightful home. Deb is unequivocal and unwavering in her support for the State of Israel and has traveled there numerous times, most recently with a national women’s group. In her 20’s, she studied in the Old City of Jerusalem and served on an Army base in the Negev Desert with Volunteers for Israel. She is committed to a strong, thriving, and safe Israel, and unapologetically supports Israel’s right to defend her citizens from anyone that would bring them harm. This includes aiding in her defense against physical and financial threats, and working through diplomatic means to negotiate peaceful resolution to ongoing conflict in the region.
